Segun Sowunmi, a former spokesperson to ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar and a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has formally announced his intention to contest the 2027 governorship election in Ogun State.
Sowunmi made the declaration during an interactive session with supporters and journalists held via Zoom on Tuesday.

He attributed his decision to enter the race to what he described as persistent development deficits and governance lapses in the state.
Sowunmi emphasized that his ambition is driven by the urgent need to address key challenges, including insecurity, poor education standards, inadequate healthcare delivery, and other critical governance issues.
“As a critical stakeholder who has always been there, I have continued to offer support, and at this critical time, I am coming forward with the best ideas for governance in our dear state,” he said.

He lamented the lack of policy continuity and programme sustainability in Ogun State’s development efforts.
Sowunmi pointed out that the state has consistently failed to fully capitalize on its strategic proximity to Lagos State to drive economic growth and opportunities.
“We need to design Ogun not to work for the person in Oke-Mosan, but to work for every person in the nooks and crannies of the state,” he stated.

He expressed particular concern over the state’s healthcare infrastructure, citing the poor condition of the Sacred Heart Hospital in Abeokuta—one of the oldest government hospitals in the state.
“It is a little bit disgusting that Ogun has been embarrassed in terms of interventions in hospitals. If we look at the infrastructure in the oldest government hospital located in Abeokuta, the Sacred Heart Hospital, there is no reason why Ogun should not be the healthcare capital of the South-West,” Sowunmi added.

Addressing the ongoing internal crises within the PDP, Sowunmi said he is closely monitoring developments across various political parties and will soon announce the platform on which he will contest.
The former Atiku spokesperson has been active in PDP affairs and is known for his vocal critiques of governance failures at both state and national levels.
His entry into the 2027 Ogun governorship race adds another high-profile contender to what is expected to be a keenly contested election in the Gateway State.
