Okepopo Community Stages Walk for Unity in Lagos Island

By HeadlineNews.News – April 28, 2025

The historic Okepopo community on Lagos Island came alive this weekend as residents staged a colourful and inspiring “Walk for Unity and Peace,” aimed at fostering community spirit, reconnecting ancestral ties, and strengthening solidarity among various family lineages.

The event, held on Sunday, April 27, 2025, was organized by the Okepopo Foundation and witnessed the active participation of descendants from prominent family compounds, including Kabiawu, Ogboye, Ajose, Oshun, Fashina, Kenku, and Ekeolere.

Leading the initiative was Prince Adedeji Eshilokun, Chairman of the Okepopo Foundation, who emphasized the importance of reconnecting with cultural roots and promoting unity across generations. He described the walk as a necessary step towards ensuring that future generations remain anchored to the proud traditions of Okepopo.

Distinguished sons and daughters of Okepopo, including industrialist and politician Otunba Rotimi Ajanaku, graced the occasion. Otunba Ajanaku applauded the organizers and commended the backing of notable traditional figures such as Chief Ibikunle Bailey (Oluwo Jakande of Lagos), Chief Tajudeen Durosinmi-Etti (Eti of Lagos), and Chief Adeleye Ajanaku (Araba of Lagos), all of whom endorsed the initiative.

Beyond the symbolic walk, the event featured a food bank initiative, providing free meals to participants and further reinforcing the community’s commitment to social welfare and inclusivity. The atmosphere was festive, characterized by lively music, cultural dances, and the vibrant display of Okepopo’s rich heritage.

Residents, young and old, joined the walk, and even non-residents were drawn in by the festive spirit, turning the event into a broader celebration of peace, unity, and community pride on Lagos Island.

The success of the Okepopo Walk for Unity has been hailed as a significant step in promoting social cohesion and preserving the enduring cultural values of one of Lagos Island’s oldest and most revered communities.
