Former Abia State Governor, Okezie Ikpeazu, has urged reconciliation within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) following the inauguration of the party’s national convention committee. Ikpeazu made the remarks on Saturday as the PDP faction loyal to Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, held a meeting to finalise preparations for the upcoming national convention.
“Today is not just ceremonial, it is consequential. This convention is more than a gathering; it is a reckoning. A moment of truth,” Ikpeazu said, noting that the party had endured internal disagreements and prolonged legal battles that tested its unity.
He described the appellate court’s affirmation of the national caretaker working committee as a chance for renewal. “It is not merely a legal victory; it is a moral and political reset. It offers us a rare opportunity to rebuild, restore confidence, and reaffirm due process within our party,” he added.
Ikpeazu stressed that reconciliation must be central to the party’s rebuilding efforts. “What the PDP needs at this moment is honest reconciliation, rooted in truth, driven by sincerity, and sustained by mutual respect. We must have the courage to listen to one another, the humility to admit where we went wrong, and the strength to forgive,” he said.
He called on stakeholders across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory to support the convention, aiming to produce a credible national working committee that can position the PDP for success in the 2027 general elections.
Also speaking, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of Kogi Central appealed to former PDP senators who had defected during the leadership crisis to return. She noted that the party’s representation in the Senate had declined from 37 to just six senators during the crisis. “When I asked a few of them why they were leaving the party, they mentioned the leadership crisis. So, I’m saying this to my colleagues who have decamped — trust me, it’s not greener on the other side. You are all welcome back to the PDP,” she said.
The remarks signal a push within the party to mend divisions and consolidate support ahead of its forthcoming national convention.
