Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland, called for the creation of Ibadan State before the end of President Bola Tinubu’s administration during his coronation ceremony. Speaking in Yoruba at Mapo Hall after receiving the Staff of Office from Governor Seyi Makinde, Oba Ladoja emphasized that the creation of Ibadan State is a priority for his people.
Governor Makinde hailed the ascension as a proud moment for Ibadan, commending the peaceful and uncontested succession process. He stated, “The succession to the Olubadan throne is well established and free from contestation, a source of pride for us all. I rejoice with the Olubadan, the Ibadan Council of Chiefs, and the people of Ibadanland. May Oba Ladoja’s reign bring lasting peace, unity, and progress to Ibadanland and Oyo State.”
The Mapo Hall ceremony attracted dignitaries, including the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III; former Kano State Governor, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso; former Osun State Governor, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola; former Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi; and former Cross River State Governor, Donald Duke.
Before the ceremony, traditional rites were conducted at Labosinde Compound in Oja’ba, where Chief Waheed Popoola, the Afobaje of Ibadanland, placed Akoko leaves on Oba Ladoja’s head, symbolizing the conferment of traditional authority. The monarch then led a procession through the city to Mapo Hall.
