A graduate of the University of Jos Faculty of Law has publicly defended the integrity of Professor Joash Amupitan, who currently serves as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, while also addressing claims made by former Minister Hon. Solomon Dalung regarding alleged misconduct linked to the institution’s 2009 graduating set.

The writer, who holds multiple degrees including LL.B, LL.M, and PhD from the same institution, described himself as a proud product of the university and emphasized that his comments were aimed at correcting public misconceptions surrounding the controversy.
He recounted his academic and professional experience with both Professor Amupitan and Hon. Dalung during his time at the university, noting long-standing academic interactions and mentorship that shaped his legal career.

According to him, Professor Amupitan, who previously served as Dean of the Faculty of Law, is a man of integrity whose leadership was instrumental in addressing irregularities in the processing of student results during the 2009 period. He explained that discrepancies at the time were traced to administrative lapses in result handling rather than academic misconduct by lecturers.
He further stated that an internal review process led to corrections of affected results across different classifications, which he described as an effort to uphold academic standards and institutional credibility rather than compromise them.

The alumnus also dismissed claims suggesting that a serving Deputy Inspector General of Police graduated in the 2009 set, stating that such information is not consistent with his knowledge as a member of the class.
On allegations that Professor Amupitan may have acted unfairly toward Hon. Dalung during his academic career, the writer argued that the timelines and institutional structures involved made such claims unlikely, stressing that no single dean has unilateral authority to influence such outcomes.

He concluded by urging caution in public commentary, especially on sensitive academic and political matters, warning against statements that could damage reputations without verified evidence. He maintained that Professor Amupitan’s record in academia and public service reflects long-standing integrity and professionalism.
The writer called for responsible discourse and urged the public to focus on verified facts, particularly in matters involving respected academic and national institutions.
