A woman in her 20s in South Korea accidentally set her apartment on fire while attempting to kill a cockroach with a homemade flamethrower, using a lighter and flammable spray. The fire, which started on Monday, spread to other parts of the building in Osan, leading to tragic consequences.
One neighbor, a Chinese woman in her 30s living on the fifth floor with her husband and two-month-old baby, died while trying to escape the blaze. The couple, trapped by thick smoke blocking the stairway, attempted to flee through their window. They handed their baby to a neighbor in an adjacent building, but while the husband escaped, the woman fell and later died in the hospital. Eight other residents suffered smoke inhalation.
South Korean police are seeking an arrest warrant for the woman who started the fire, potentially charging her with accidentally causing a fire and death by negligence. The building housed commercial shops on the first floor and 32 residential units across the second to fifth floors.
