OOPL Condemns ‘Gestapo-like’ EFCC Raid, Threatens Legal Action

The management of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) in Abeokuta, Ogun State, has accused operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of staging a violent invasion of its premises in the early hours of Sunday, August 10, 2025.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the OOPL described the incident as a “Gestapo-like” operation that left several people injured and caused widespread panic among guests and residents.

According to the management, more than 50 armed men, allegedly led by an individual identified as “Olapade,” stormed the complex around 2 a.m., shooting into the air and threatening to kill people. The statement alleged that the raid targeted a private event being held at the library’s amusement facility.

The OOPL explained that the Managing Director, Mr. Vitalis Ortese, contacted the team leader by phone and was informed that the operatives were acting on an intelligence tip. The EFCC operatives reportedly claimed that the police had been notified about the operation.

However, the statement noted that both the police officers stationed at the library gates and additional personnel from Kemta Police Station, who had been invited by the event organisers, denied prior knowledge of the raid. It further alleged that the operatives did not present any search or arrest warrant.

The management accused the EFCC of violating its rights as a corporate entity and infringing on the rights of the guests who attended the event.

“This action by the EFCC is a clear case of invasion of private property, infringement of OOPL rights as corporate citizens, and a blatant violation of the rights of the people who gathered for the event,” the statement read.

OOPL said it has commenced its own investigation into the incident and will escalate the matter to the highest authorities, including the EFCC, the police, and the Department of State Services.

The management is demanding a formal explanation and an apology from the EFCC for what it described as “gangster-like induced chaos” that led to injuries among attendees. It warned that if these demands are not met, it will seek legal redress and push for sanctions against those responsible.
