Opposition Coalition Considers Obi’s Single-Term Presidency Pledge, Tanko Confirms

Dr. Yunusa Tanko, National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement Worldwide, revealed Tuesday that former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has formally presented his single-term presidency proposal to Nigeria’s emerging opposition coalition.

The announcement came during a traditional ceremony in Gombe, where Obi received the chieftaincy title ‘Sarki Maskan’ (War Hero) from the Pantami community, alongside a commendation letter recognizing his community service. Tanko was simultaneously honored with the title ‘Dan Maje Babba Pantanmi’ by District Head Mai Martaba Abdullahi.

Speaking to PUNCH Online after the ceremony, Tanko expressed confidence that the coalition—which includes prominent figures like former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai, and former Senate President David Mark—would embrace Obi’s four-year commitment.

“The proposal is now before the coalition for their consideration,” Tanko stated. “We believe it will succeed because it demonstrates genuine integrity, which Peter Obi represents. Nigeria desperately needs leaders of integrity.”

Tanko emphasized that Obi considers four years sufficient to revitalize Nigeria’s struggling economy and transform the nation’s trajectory.

“Despite the constitution not requiring single-term limits, Obi has voluntarily committed to serving just one term. He’s convinced four years provides ample time to fulfill his vision—a testament to his preparedness and focus,” Tanko explained.

The coordinator highlighted specific promises, including stabilizing Nigeria’s power sector and restoring the country’s export capacity. “Fixing electricity alone would address numerous challenges. He pledges to make Nigeria an exporting nation again, ensuring our aircraft don’t depart empty,” he added.

Northern Recognition Signals Broader Appeal

Tanko noted the significance of Obi accepting the Pantami community’s traditional honor after historically declining similar titles. “Obi doesn’t pursue titles, but this recognition is extraordinary—a northern community honoring an Igbo leader for his generosity and impact. It demonstrates Obi’s expanding national acceptance, particularly in northern regions where he faced challenges during 2023.”

The coordinator attributed this shift to Obi’s humanitarian initiatives across northern Nigeria, particularly in underserved areas. “His Excellency has personally visited communities lacking clean water and funded borehole projects. In Pantami, residents now say, “Fetch water from Peter Obi’s borehole”; that speaks volumes about changing perceptions.”

Tanko detailed additional community investments, including youth entrepreneurship support and improvements to Almajiri schools, such as constructing basic facilities like toilets. “These actions have generated genuine grassroots support,” he observed.

The Pantami recognition, according to Tanko, exemplifies Obi’s “bridge-building legacy” and suggests a potential political realignment approaching the 2027 elections.
