The Oyo State Police Command has arrested 1,216 drivers for operating vehicles without valid third-party insurance, in line with directives from the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. Kayode Egbetokun.
The IGP had earlier mandated that all motorists must obtain third-party insurance by February 1, 2025, or face enforcement actions, including arrest and vehicle impoundment. Commissioners of Police across the country were tasked with ensuring compliance.
Speaking in Ibadan on Wednesday, the Oyo State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Johnson Adenola, confirmed the arrests in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN). He revealed that out of the 1,216 arrested:
- 111 drivers have been charged to court
- 425 were released after providing proof of valid insurance
- 680 cases remain under investigation for various related offences
“The enforcement exercise is ongoing and has not been suspended,” Adenola emphasized.
To enhance public awareness, the command—through its Public Relations Department, Community Policing Unit, and the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC)—has launched advocacy campaigns and community outreach programs to educate the public on vehicle insurance requirements.
The CP urged motorists to ensure their vehicles are properly documented, warning that non-compliance would lead to arrest and prosecution.
On broader security issues, Adenola raised concerns about criminals disguising as cart pushers to perpetrate theft. He emphasized that public safety is a shared responsibility and called on residents to remain vigilant.
“We continue to engage with critical stakeholders to monitor and respond to emerging security threats to maintain peace in the state,” he added.
He encouraged citizens to promptly report suspicious activity to the police for swift response and intervention.
