PDP NATIONAL CONVENTION: APPEAL COURT DISMISSES TURAKI-LED FACTION

The Court of Appeal has upheld the earlier judgment of the Federal High Court of Nigeria that halted the national convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

In its ruling on Monday in Abuja, the appellate court dismissed an appeal filed by a faction of the party led by Taminu Turaki.

The Turaki-led faction, which claims to be the legitimate leadership of the opposition party, had emerged from the PDP national convention held in Ibadan, Oyo State, on November 15 and 16, 2022. The group had challenged the earlier court decision that restrained the party from proceeding with or recognising the outcome of the convention.

However, the Court of Appeal ruled that the appeal lacked merit and affirmed the judgment delivered by the Federal High Court.

The court also ordered Turaki and other members of the faction’s National Working Committee (NWC) to pay ₦2 million in costs for filing the appeal.

The judgment followed consolidated appeals arising from disputes over the Ibadan convention, which has been at the centre of the ongoing leadership crisis within the PDP.
