Former Anambra State governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has described Nigerian internet fraudsters, popularly known as Yahoo boys, as “geniuses who need redirection.”

Speaking at the Money Beyond Wealth conference held at All Saints’ Cathedral, Onitsha, Obi said many of the youths involved in cybercrime possess creativity and courage that could be harnessed for national development.
“Some of our so-called Yahoo boys are geniuses who need redirection, not condemnation,” he said. “Their energy, if properly guided, can drive innovation and productivity.”

Obi, however, warned against the “reckless pursuit of money,” stressing that a nation that rewards dishonesty cannot build integrity. He urged leaders to lead by example and youths to embrace hard work and innovation.
His remarks come amid global concerns over the activities of Nigerian cybercriminals. The EFCC and international authorities, including those in the UK and US, have repeatedly decried the damage internet fraud has done to Nigeria’s image abroad.

EFCC chairman Ola Olukoyede recently lamented that Nigerian travelers face extra scrutiny overseas due to the crimes committed by a few, calling it a “national shame.”
