Nigeria consumed 613.62 million litres of petrol from October 2024 to October 10, 2025, for transportation, power generation, and domestic use. Of this, 377.54 million litres (63%) were imported, while 236.08 million litres (37%) came from domestic refineries, led by the Dangote Petroleum Refinery. Domestic production nearly doubled from 9.62 million litres daily in October 2024 to 18.93 million litres by October 2025, while imports dropped 67% from 46.38 million to 15.11 million litres daily.
Monthly data shows a steady decline in imports and a rise in local supply, though fluctuations persisted due to logistical and maintenance issues.
The Dangote Refinery, operational since May 2023, now supplies 15-20 million litres daily, reducing pressure on foreign reserves. Analysts note that despite progress, Nigeria’s 60% reliance on imports highlights the need for uninterrupted crude oil access in naira to boost local refining, enhance energy security, and lower pump prices.
