Police Ban Planned Birthday Rally for Peter Obi in Kaduna Over Security Fears

Kaduna, July 19, 2025 The Kaduna State Police Command has banned a proposed birthday rally in honour of former presidential candidate Peter Obi, citing security concerns and potential threats to public order.

In a statement issued on Friday by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Mansir Hassan, the police warned that intelligence reports suggest criminal elements are planning to hijack the rally to incite violence and disrupt the peace.

Though the event was intended as a show of solidarity by Obi’s supporters, the police stressed that political rallies and public gatherings of a political nature remain suspended in Kaduna State until the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officially lifts the ban on campaign activities.

“The Kaduna State Police Command wishes to inform the public that it has received credible intelligence regarding a planned political rally by supporters of Mr. Peter Obi,” the statement read.

“While we respect citizens’ rights to freedom of association and expression, we must act to prevent any situation that may endanger public safety.”

The police also noted that several political parties had scheduled their primary elections for the same day as the proposed rally and had duly notified the authorities. The overlapping events, according to the command, pose a risk of tension and possible clashes in parts of the state.

“Given the volatile nature of multiple political activities occurring simultaneously, we strongly advise organisers of the Peter Obi rally to suspend any form of public procession,” the statement added.

The command warned that it would take legal action against any individual or group that flouts the directive.

Reaffirming its commitment to public safety, the Kaduna Police Command urged residents to remain law-abiding and cooperate with security agencies to ensure peace and order are maintained across the state.
