Police Ban Pro-Peter Obi Rally in Kaduna, Vow to Arrest Violators

The Kaduna State Police Command has announced a ban on a proposed political rally organized by supporters of the 2023 Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, warning that any attempt to proceed with the event will result in arrests.

The rally, reportedly planned to coincide with Obi’s birthday celebration, was deemed unauthorized and a potential security risk by the police.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Mansir Hassan, said credible intelligence revealed that criminal elements were planning to infiltrate and hijack the rally to incite violence and disrupt public peace.

“The Kaduna State Police Command wishes to bring to the attention of the general public that it has received credible intelligence regarding a planned political rally by supporters of Mr. Peter Obi in honour of his birthday,” the statement read.

“While the Command respects the right of individuals to celebrate and associate with their political leaders, all forms of political rallies and public gatherings of a political nature remain suspended across the State until the official commencement of political activities as stipulated by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).”

Hassan further explained that the rally was scheduled to take place on the same day INEC had approved for political party primaries ahead of upcoming by-elections in the state. Several parties had already notified the police of their events, raising the risk of logistical clashes and potential violence.

“The planned rally is expected to overlap with and disrupt areas designated for other political party primaries, thereby posing a significant risk of tension and breakdown of law and order,” he said.

The Command advised organisers to suspend the planned gathering in the interest of public safety, warning that any violation of the directive would result in legal consequences.

“The Kaduna State Police Command remains committed to safeguarding the lives and property of all residents and will not hesitate to take necessary legal action against any individual or group found violating this directive,” the statement concluded.

The police also expressed appreciation to residents for their cooperation in maintaining peace and security across the state.
