#Police bow to pressure, withdraw invitation to Emir Sanusi over Sallah day violence in Kano

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has officially withdrawn an earlier invitation issued to the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, regarding a violent incident that marred the Sallah celebrations in Kano State on March 30, 2025.

The Emir was initially summoned for questioning after a vigilante attached to his security detail was fatally stabbed at the Kofar Mata Eid Ground during the festivities. Several others were reportedly injured in the altercation, which disrupted what was meant to be a peaceful religious gathering.

In a statement released by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the NPF clarified that the invitation was intended to obtain Sanusi’s account of the incident that led to the breakdown of law and order. However, following consultations with key stakeholders and in line with the Inspector-General of Police’s (IGP) stance on non-politicisation of police duties, the decision was reversed.

“After careful consideration and in deference to the advice of respected stakeholders, the IGP has directed that the invitation be withdrawn to avoid any misinterpretation of police actions,” the statement read.

Instead, operatives from the Force Intelligence Department (FID) have been assigned to travel to Kano to obtain the Emir’s statement.

The statement also provided background on the build-up to the incident, noting that intelligence reports had revealed that both Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II and his rival, Emir Ado Bayero, planned to hold separate Durbar Festivals—a traditional ceremonial procession held during Eid.

To prevent clashes, the IGP deployed DIG Abubakar Sadiq, who oversees the North West and the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID), to engage with both parties and the Kano State Government. An agreement was reached that neither emir would hold a Durbar or ride on horseback during the Sallah celebrations.

Despite this arrangement, Emir Sanusi, who arrived at the Eid ground in his vehicle, reportedly mounted a horse for a procession after prayers, accompanied by local vigilantes. This act sparked a confrontation with local youths, resulting in the death of one Usman Sagiru and injuries to several others.

The Police expressed regret over the violence and reiterated that the tragic outcome was what the security consultations had sought to avoid. The statement confirmed that arrests have been made in connection to the incident and emphasized that investigations are ongoing.

“The Nigeria Police Force remains committed to upholding justice, neutrality, and professionalism in its investigative processes. All those found culpable in this case will face the full weight of the law,” the statement concluded.
