Police Deployed Amid Lagos Demolitions as Residents Report Child Fatalities

Heavy police presence was deployed along the Third Mainland Bridge and Oworonshoki areas after residents threatened protests over midnight demolitions starting October 25, 2025, in Coker and Ojulari. Two children—a newborn and a five-year-old—reportedly died amid chaos, with locals blaming tear gas injuries.

Residents like Idris Adeleke and Ismaila Anifowose described sudden nighttime demolitions without notice, leaving families homeless despite recent markings. Adeleke lost belongings and shelter for his children; Anifowose, after two prior evictions, borrowed N400,000 for a one-month rental now destroyed.

The Lagos State Urban Renewal Agency claimed 80 owners were compensated, with more planned. Police spokesperson Adebimpe Adebisi confirmed security measures for order.

Civil society group Spaces for Change (S4C) condemned the actions, citing defiance of a High Court injunction in suit ID/9910GCM/2025 restraining demolitions on specified streets. S4C demanded suspension, compliance with court orders, resident resettlement, and prosecution of attacking officers.
