According to the statement, the incident occurred on January 23, 2026, at about 11:00 p.m., when police operatives conducting routine stop-and-search duties along the Calabar–Itu Highway intercepted a commercial bus with registration number ARR600ZY heading towards Calabar.

A detailed search of the vehicle led to the discovery of a carton containing 415 live cartridges. The bus was reportedly driven by a man identified as Ikenna, with several passengers onboard.

During questioning, the driver claimed the ammunition did not belong to him, alleging that he was transporting it as a waybill consignment to an unknown recipient in Calabar.

The police spokesperson further stated that during the operation, a passenger identified as Excel interfered with officers by engaging in provocative behaviour that disrupted their duties.

She added that another commuter, Bright, who claimed to be an official of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) but could not present a valid identification card, allegedly joined in physically assaulting the officers.

Both individuals were immediately arrested by the police.

Further investigations led to the arrest of one Ndubisi Raphael, a 36-year-old man from Nyaje village in Akamkpa Local Government Area of Cross River State, who was apprehended in Calabar and taken into custody.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in Akwa Ibom State, Baba Mohammed Azae, has ordered a discreet and comprehensive investigation to determine the origin and intended purpose of the seized ammunition, with a view to prosecuting all those found to be involved.

The police commissioner reaffirmed the command’s determination to curb the spread of illegal arms and ammunition and cautioned the public against obstructing law enforcement officers in the course of their duties.

He also assured residents that the command remains fully committed to safeguarding lives, property, and public order across Akwa Ibom State.
