The incident occurred around 9:45 p.m. on February 20, 2026, when armed men, believed to be members of the Lakurawa criminal network, reportedly moved a herd of cattle to conceal their advance toward security positions. Police operatives from the Counter Terrorism Unit engaged the attackers in a gun duel, forcing them to retreat.

Kebbi State Police Commissioner Umar Mohammed Hadeija confirmed that the swift response of officers prevented casualties. “Our operatives were vigilant and professionally responded to the attack. The bandits were repelled and forced to flee. Although some temporary security structures were damaged, no lives were lost, and no injuries were recorded,” he said.

Additional security reinforcements have been deployed along the border corridor, and residents were assured that the situation is calm and under control.

The commissioner also warned herders and livestock owners against night grazing or moving cattle in ways that could provide cover for criminal elements. He stressed that security agencies will take firm and lawful action against activities linked to such practices.

Police Public Relations Officer Bashir Usman reaffirmed the command’s commitment to protecting lives and property across the state, noting that efforts to dismantle criminal networks operating in border communities would continue. Residents were urged to go about lawful activities without fear as patrols and surveillance intensify along vulnerable routes.
