Suspended Senator representing Kogi Central, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, has insisted on visiting her constituency for the Eid-el-Fitr celebrations despite a ban on public gatherings imposed by the Kogi State Government.
On Monday, the state government prohibited rallies and public events, citing security concerns. Commissioner for Information, Kingsley Fanwo, stated that the ban was based on “credible security reports” aimed at preventing potential threats to the state’s stability.
Senator Natasha Rejects Ban, Confirms Visit
In response, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s media team dismissed speculations that she had canceled her visit.
“We are pleased to confirm that Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s Sallah visit to Kogi Central will proceed as planned. Despite rumours circulating online, there has been no official announcement from our office regarding the cancellation of this visit,” the statement read.
Reaffirming her commitment to her constituents, the senator vowed to celebrate Eid-el-Fitr with her people and foster unity within the district.
“Her dedication to the people of Kogi Central is unwavering, and she looks forward to celebrating Eid-el-Fitr with her constituents,” the team stated, assuring that necessary arrangements were in place for a smooth and joyous celebration.
Police Issue Strong Warning
However, the Kogi State Police Command has warned Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan to cancel her planned visit or risk facing legal consequences.
State Commissioner of Police, Miller Dantawaye, issued the warning on Tuesday, emphasizing that the event would violate the government’s order.
“Following intelligence reports on security threats in Kogi State and the subsequent ban on all forms of rallies and processions, the Nigeria Police Force, Kogi State Command, has called on the organisers of the planned rally in Okene to cancel the event in the interest of peace,” the CP stated.
He further warned that intelligence reports indicate that hoodlums might hijack the gathering, leading to possible unrest.
“The Kogi State Police Command will not hesitate to enforce the full weight of the law on anyone who disturbs the peace and order of the state,” he added.
Tensions Rise as Showdown Looms
With both sides standing their ground, tensions remain high in Kogi Central. It remains to be seen whether the senator will defy the ban or if security forces will intervene to prevent the gathering.
