###POLICEMAN, SCAVENGER CRUSHED TO DEATH IN LAGOS ROAD ACCIDENT

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) disclosed that a police officer and a scavenger died in a fatal road accident at Ilubirin inward Simpson, on Lagos Island.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, LASTMA’s general manager, said preliminary investigations revealed that a speeding Toyota Camry (MUS 885 JA) lost control, veered out of its lane, and struck the victims.

Bakare-Oki stated that the impact resulted in their immediate death. He added that LASTMA operatives at the scene quickly cordoned off the area to prevent further accidents and apprehended the driver, who attempted to flee.

The driver was handed over to the Adeniji Adele police division for investigation and possible prosecution. LASTMA also removed the vehicle to restore traffic flow.

He described the incident as a painful reminder of the dangers associated with reckless driving. Bakare-Oki urged motorists to obey speed limits and maintain road discipline, noting that overspeeding remains a major cause of preventable deaths on Lagos roads.

He also reaffirmed LASTMA’s commitment to public education on road safety and called on drivers to cultivate safer driving habits to avoid similar tragedies.

Accidents continue to rise on Nigerian roads, often leading to fatalities and injuries. The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) has frequently attributed many road accidents to overspeeding and drunk driving.
