POLITICAL REALIGNMENTS AND BATTLE FOR 2027

Nigeria’s political landscape is experiencing a wave of shifting alliances ahead of the 2027 general elections, as defections across party lines become more widespread and unpredictable. What was once seen as a steady movement toward the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has now evolved into a more complex pattern of political realignments.

Across different levels of government, politicians are changing parties not only in pursuit of influence but also as part of broader strategic repositioning. Recent developments show that these defections are no longer one-directional, with movements occurring across multiple parties.

Several governors have switched from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC, highlighting a significant trend. Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara moved to the ruling party in December 2025, linking his decision to political alignment with the presidency. Similarly, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori led a large-scale shift of PDP members in the state to the APC, describing it as a calculated move in the interest of the state.

Other governors, including those from Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Enugu, and Plateau states, have also made similar transitions, reinforcing what analysts see as a major political realignment ahead of the next election cycle.

However, not all defections have been toward the ruling party. Some politicians have explored alternative platforms, reflecting a diversification of political choices. Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke reportedly moved to the Accord Party, while other figures have taken different directions in response to internal party dynamics.

In Zamfara State, political shifts toward the APC were met with resistance from some officials, including a former commissioner who chose to step down rather than change party affiliation. This highlights a growing countertrend where some politicians are choosing to remain loyal to their original parties.

In the South-East, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi has aligned with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), signaling a new strategic direction. He emphasized that future elections may focus less on party platforms and more on leadership quality.

Within the National Assembly, the impact of defections has also been significant. Several lawmakers have moved to the ADC, citing internal disputes and leadership challenges within their former parties, particularly the PDP. These changes have contributed to the rising influence of smaller opposition platforms.

Prominent figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, have framed the defections as essential to maintaining democratic balance, stressing the importance of a strong opposition in ensuring accountability.

Political analysts attribute the ongoing shifts to internal crises within major parties and the search for more viable platforms ahead of 2027. As the election approaches, Nigeria’s political environment is becoming increasingly fluid, shaped by ambition, ideology, and survival strategies.

While these movements may serve political interests, their true impact will ultimately be measured by how they influence governance and the choices available to voters. For now, the realignments continue, with no clear end in sight.
