Pope Leo XIV has reacted with deep sadness to the recent wave of violent attacks in Nigeria, following reports that gunmen killed up to 162 people in one of the deadliest incidents recorded in the country in recent months.

The Pope expressed his concern in a message shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday, where he offered prayers for those affected and urged authorities to intensify efforts to safeguard lives.
“I learned with sorrow and deep concern about the recent attacks on several communities in Nigeria, which resulted in significant loss of life. I extend my spiritual solidarity to all victims of violence and terrorism, and I pray that the relevant authorities will act decisively to guarantee the safety and protection of every citizen,” the Pontiff wrote.

According to reports, the deadly attack took place in Woro village, Kwara State, shortly after the military carried out operations in the area targeting suspected terrorist elements.
During the assault, the attackers were said to have set shops ablaze and burned the residence of a traditional ruler, forcing injured residents to escape into surrounding bushes for safety.

The incident has further intensified national and international concern over Nigeria’s worsening security situation, with renewed calls for stronger action by security agencies to protect vulnerable communities and prevent future attacks.
