POPE LEO XIV CARRIES CROSS FOR FULL GOOD FRIDAY PROCESSION, THE FIRST PONTIFF TO DO SO IN DECADES

Pope Leo XIV made a powerful statement during his first Good Friday as pontiff, personally carrying the cross throughout the full Stations of the Cross procession in Rome — something no pope has done in decades.

The solemn event, known as the Via Crucis, took place at the Colosseum, where thousands gathered for the torchlit procession that retraces the final journey of Jesus Christ to his crucifixion.

Holding a simple wooden cross, the pope walked through all 14 stations, marking each moment from Christ’s condemnation to his burial. His action was widely seen as symbolic — a message of shared suffering, humility, and leadership through sacrifice.

Earlier in the week, the pope explained his decision, saying he wanted to carry the pain and struggles of humanity in prayer, especially in a time of global tension and conflict.

During the first station, a reflection delivered at the event focused on the responsibility of those in power. It stressed that leaders will ultimately be judged by how they use their authority — whether to promote peace or fuel conflict.

The tradition of the Way of the Cross dates back centuries and remains one of the most important rituals of the Easter season. It draws believers into reflection on faith, sacrifice, and compassion in real-life struggles.

Past popes, including Pope John Paul II, once carried the cross during the procession, but in more recent years, others like Pope Francis participated without physically bearing it, largely due to age or health concerns.

At 70, Pope Leo XIV is considered physically active, and his decision to carry the cross throughout the entire procession has already been interpreted as a defining moment of his papacy — one that signals a hands-on, deeply symbolic style of leadership.

The ceremony ended outside the Colosseum, bringing together thousands in reflection, prayer, and a renewed focus on faith in action.
