Power Minister Adelabu Announces 2027 Oyo Governorship Bid

Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Adebayo Bayo Adelabu, has formally declared his intention to contest for the governorship of Oyo State in the 2027 elections.

The minister made his announcement on Friday during a strategic meeting with party members in Ogbomoso, hosted at the residence of prominent party leader Ayoade Adeseun. The gathering was part of Adelabu’s ongoing consultations across various geopolitical zones within the state as he builds momentum for his gubernatorial campaign.

“I’m here to officially inform you that I intend to contest for governor of Oyo State in 2027,” Adelabu told the assembled party faithful. “I’m prepared to put to the test all the experience I’ve accumulated from my previous two electoral campaigns.”

While acknowledging the political aspirations of other zones within the state, Adelabu emphasized his belief in divine timing. “I’m not opposed to other zones producing the governor of this state. All I know is that God’s time is perfect,” he stated.

The minister specifically highlighted Ogbomoso’s strategic importance in state politics, expressing satisfaction with the recent unification of previously divided local factions. “Ogbomoso plays a crucial role in this state’s elections. I’m here to seek your support and backing, and I’m pleased to see that all the factions in Ogbomoso have now come together as one,” he said.

Adelabu also made appeals for support in Oyo town, outlining his vision for inclusive governance. “I will run an all-inclusive government where everyone will be involved in the governance of the state, and no one will be left behind if I become governor in 2027,” he promised.

The minister emphasized his commitment to earning the nomination through merit rather than imposition. “I want people to understand that no one can impose anybody. I want to work and prove to our party members that I’m up to the task. I want to demonstrate that I can withstand and survive competition and emerge victorious.”

Describing Oyo as “like a second home,” Adelabu expressed confidence in his local support base. “My supporters, followers, associates and allies are all here. They have been supporting me in the past and are ready to support me again,” he said.

He pledged special attention to the Oyo zone, stating: “I will give what is due to Oyo. Oyo zone deserves better treatment because it is symbolic. Oyo is historical, symbolic and a blessing to the entire state.”

Beyond his gubernatorial ambitions, Adelabu used the platform to rally support for President Bola Tinubu’s potential re-election bid. “This is another opportunity for Yorubas to serve their full two terms as President of Nigeria. Nigeria has much to benefit if Tinubu is re-elected,” he remarked.

This marks Adelabu’s third attempt at the Oyo State governorship. In 2019, he ran as the All Progressive Congress (APC) candidate but was defeated by Seyi Makinde. He contested again in 2023 under the Accord Party banner, but Makinde successfully secured his second term in office.
