The United Kingdom’s Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, has strongly condemned an overnight missile strike on a gas facility in Qatar, describing it as a serious threat to regional stability and global energy markets.
In a statement on his official X account on March 19, Starmer said, “I condemn in the strongest terms the overnight Iranian strike on a Qatari gas facility.” He emphasised the broader implications for citizens in the UK, warning that escalating conflict could drive up the cost of living. “Ending the war is the quickest way to reduce the cost of living,” he added, highlighting ongoing diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions across the Middle East.

The attack targeted Ras Laffan Industrial City, Qatar’s main gas production hub, and was reportedly launched from Iran. QatarEnergy confirmed the strike caused extensive damage but said all personnel were safe. Emergency teams were deployed to contain fires resulting from the attack.
According to Qatar’s Ministry of Defense, five ballistic missiles were launched, four of which were successfully intercepted, while one hit Ras Laffan, triggering a fire.
Starmer also ruled out sending UK forces to Iran, stating that military involvement would only be considered if strictly aligned with Britain’s national interests. The UK leader called for a swift resolution to prevent further disruption to energy supplies and global markets.
The strike has intensified international concern over Iran’s regional activities and the potential ripple effects on energy infrastructure worldwide.
