Abuja, Nigeria – A public affairs analyst and activist Dr. Ebitimi Dedam
has described President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State as a necessary and commendable intervention to address the prolonged political crisis in the state.
The analyst praised the President’s decision, saying it demonstrates strong leadership and attentiveness to national concerns, particularly regarding security threats and governance failures in Rivers State.
Emergency Rule a Decisive Response to Crisis
According to him, the move reflects Tinubu’s commitment to maintaining peace, law, and order, ensuring that the state remains stable despite escalating tensions.
“The declaration was based on the Supreme Court’s judgment and recent security intelligence, making it a carefully considered response,” he said.
He further pointed to the recent bombing of an oil pipeline in Rivers State, which he argued exposed Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s inability to effectively manage security and governance, necessitating federal intervention.
Suspension of State Officials a Step Towards Stability
The analyst also defended the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and the Rivers State House of Assembly, emphasizing that their removal was aimed at restoring order. He commended the appointment of an administrator to oversee the state under the Federal Executive Council’s supervision, describing it as a patriotic and strategic decision.
In a statement, he wrote:
“The declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State is a step in the right direction. I commend President Bola Tinubu for his decisiveness and his responsiveness to the situation. This move shows that he is fully in charge, aware of national security concerns, and committed to preserving law and order in Nigeria.”
“The President’s reliance on the Supreme Court’s judgment and up-to-date security reports proves that his decision was well thought out, especially as the Rivers State Governor has displayed dereliction of duty, particularly in the aftermath of the pipeline bombing.”
“The suspension of the Governor, his deputy, and state lawmakers, coupled with the appointment of an administrator, is a necessary action to restore stability in the state. May God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
Tinubu’s Nationwide Address on Emergency Rule
Headlinenews.news reported that President Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State during a nationwide broadcast on Tuesday, citing persistent political instability and security threats, including vandalism of critical oil infrastructure.
The federal government has justified the move as a last resort to restore stability in the region, ensure the protection of oil assets, and prevent further economic losses. However, the decision has sparked mixed reactions, with some supporting the intervention and others questioning its constitutional implications.
As the situation unfolds, stakeholders across Nigeria are closely watching to see how the emergency rule will impact governance, security, and political reconciliation efforts in Rivers State.
