Rape: Nigerian Student in UK Faces Deportation After Prison Sentence

A UK-based Nigerian postgraduate student, Chiemka Okoronta, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for raping a teenage girl and will be deported after serving his term, according to a BBC report.

The incident occurred on March 25 in West Yorkshire when the victim became stranded after a night bus stopped unexpectedly. Okoronta, 29, offered to share a taxi but diverted it to his flat in Morley, Leeds, where he lured the girl inside and assaulted her in a locked toilet.

After the attack, the victim escaped and called the police with help from a passerby. In court, she said the ordeal left her traumatized and struggling with flashbacks and nightmares.

Judge Sophie McKone described Okoronta as a “dangerous sexual predator” who planned the assault. He must also serve three years on extended licence and will remain on the sex offenders register for life.

Detective Constable Sue Sutcliffe praised the victim’s courage and urged others to report sexual offences.

The case adds to a growing list of sexual crime convictions involving Nigerians abroad, following a similar 2024 case where Timilehin Olatunji received a 10-year jail sentence in the UK.
