#”Rivers Sets August 9 for Fresh Local Government Elections After Supreme Court Nullification”

The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) has announced August 9, 2025, as the new date for local government elections following the Supreme Court’s nullification of the October 5, 2024 polls.

RSIEC Chairman, Justice Adolphus Enebeli (rtd.), made the announcement on Wednesday during a stakeholders’ meeting in Port Harcourt. He stated that the commission is acting under the powers conferred by the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission Law No. 2 of 2018.

“The local government council elections will be conducted across all 23 Local Government Areas of Rivers State on Saturday, August 9, 2025,” Enebeli declared.

Meanwhile, the Rivers State House of Assembly has summoned Justice Enebeli to appear before it within 48 hours regarding the conduct of the 2024 local government elections. Speaker Martin Amaewhule, who presided over Wednesday’s plenary, warned that an arrest warrant would be issued if the RSIEC chairman fails to comply.

Additionally, the Assembly has urged Governor Siminalayi Fubara to submit the names of all commissioners who were not screened by the Amaewhule-led Assembly for proper confirmation.
