SAUDI ARABIA CONDEMNS IRAN’S RETALIATORY ATTACKS ON US BASES IN GULF COUNTRIES

Saudi Arabia has denounced Iran’s recent military strikes across the Gulf, confirming that Iranian forces directly targeted Riyadh and parts of the kingdom’s eastern region in a major escalation of tensions.

In an official statement, the Saudi Foreign Ministry said the attacks were intercepted by the country’s air defence systems. The government stressed that the strikes were unjustifiable under any circumstances, noting that Iran had been clearly informed that Saudi territory and airspace would not be used for operations against it.

The acknowledgement marks a significant shift, as the kingdom moves from expressing solidarity with neighbouring Gulf states to confirming that it has itself come under direct attack.

The development follows coordinated strikes by the United States and Israel on several sites within Iran. Washington and Tel Aviv described their actions as a strategic move to weaken Iran’s military capabilities and counter perceived threats, while Tehran condemned the operation as a violation of its sovereignty and promised retaliation.

Shortly after the joint offensive, Iran launched missile and drone attacks aimed at Israel and US-linked assets across the region. Air defence systems were activated in multiple Gulf capitals as projectiles were intercepted mid-air.

Tehran had earlier warned that any attack on its territory would result in US bases in the region being treated as legitimate targets. Despite concerns raised by several Middle Eastern nations urging restraint, the military operation went ahead.

Confirmation that Riyadh and the eastern region were struck has intensified fears of a wider regional confrontation.

Saudi Arabia’s position underscores its delicate balancing act. As a longstanding security ally of the United States, the kingdom remains aligned with Washington’s defence framework. However, in recent years, Riyadh has also pursued efforts to ease tensions with Tehran following decades of rivalry and sectarian competition.

The current crisis builds on longstanding disputes over Iran’s nuclear programme, proxy conflicts in Yemen, Syria and Iraq, and recurring hostilities between Israel and Iran. Repeated diplomatic attempts to reduce tensions have struggled to gain lasting momentum.

Global reactions have called for restraint and renewed dialogue, as analysts warn that continued hostilities could disrupt energy supplies, affect global trade routes and destabilise an already fragile security environment in the Middle East.

With military exchanges intensifying and air routes across parts of the region temporarily suspended, the situation now stands at a critical point. Whether diplomatic engagement can prevent further escalation remains uncertain, but the stakes for Saudi Arabia, the Gulf region and the broader international community are undeniably high.
