Segun Awolowo (1963–2025): Celebrating a Distinguished Life of Service and Legacy

Farewell to Segun Awolowo: An Illustrious Son of Yorubaland Gone Too Soon.

We mourn the passing of Olusegun Awolowo, grandson of the legendary Obafemi Awolowo, who departed this life at age 62 today. He leaves behind his beloved wife, children, and his grieving mother, Abbah Folawiyo, whom we pray God Almighty comfort in this time of loss.

Born on 27 September 1963, Segun built a distinguished career in law and public service. Called to the Bar in December 1989, he served with integrity in legal practice, then entered the public sector.

In 2013 he was appointed Executive Director/CEO of the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC). Under his leadership the “Zero Oil” plan—shifting Nigeria’s export focus toward value-added goods—gained momentum and international recognition.

Later, in 2021, he was elected President of the ECOWAS region’s National Trade Promotion Organisations—a testament to his regional influence and commitment to trade development.

Segun was also known as a devoted husband and father, a mentor to younger professionals and a proud son of Yorubaland. Though his years were fewer than many would have wished, his impact was deep. His life measured not by days but by service: to family, to his heritage, and to Nigeria’s economic transformation.

Psalm 23 reminds us, “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.” (KJV) And from the New Testament: “Well done, thou good and faithful servant…” (Matthew 25:21). Let us say of Segun: well done indeed.

A Legacy of Grace and Purpose: Remembering Segun Awolowo

To his wife and children, we extend our sincere condolences. To his aged mother, Abbah Folawiyo, may the Lord wrap you in His arms of peace and comfort you beyond human words. To the Awolowo family, we offer our profound sympathy for such a tragic loss.

May his gentle soul rest in eternal peace. Amen.

A Solemn, Uplifting Prayer for the Soul of Segun Awolowo

Almighty and Everlasting God,

We come before You with hearts weighed down by sorrow, yet lifted by the assurance of Your eternal mercy. Today, we commend to Your loving hands the soul of Segun Awolowo, Your son who has journeyed from this earthly realm into the peace of Your everlasting kingdom.

Father, You are the Author of Life and the One who calls us home in Your perfect time. We thank You for the years You granted him — years of service, dignity, purpose, and love. Though his departure feels painfully early to us, we trust that Your wisdom is higher than ours and that in Your presence there is fullness of joy.

Lord, receive Segun into the company of the faithful departed. Grant him rest where “there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying,” and where every soul finds healing in Your light. Cleanse him of all earthly burdens, forgive his shortcomings, and adorn him with the crown of eternal life. May he behold Your face in glory and rejoice among the saints forever.

We ask, O God, for extraordinary comfort upon his aged mother, his wife, his children, and the entire Awolowo and Folawiyo families. Surround them with Your peace that passes all understanding. Strengthen them through the Holy Spirit, and let Your love be their refuge in this season of grief.

Lord, grant that the memory of Segun’s goodness will inspire all who knew him, and may his legacy continue to shine.

May his gentle soul rest in perfect, eternal peace.

Amen.
