Senate confirms Oluyede as chief of defence staff

Oluyede and other newly appointed service chiefs—Major General Waheedi Shaibu (Chief of Army Staff), Rear Admiral Idi Abbas (Chief of Naval Staff), Air Vice Marshal Kennedy Aneke (Chief of Air Staff), and Major General Emmanuel Undiendeye (Chief of Defence Intelligence)—appeared before the Senate for screening.

The nominees arrived at the National Assembly Complex around 10 a.m., accompanied by senior military officers. Oluyede was cleared within an hour following a brief session under tight security.

The appointments follow a presidential request for expeditious consideration and are part of efforts to strengthen national security and improve coordination among military and intelligence agencies.

Outgoing service chiefs were commended for their patriotic service and leadership, with successors urged to uphold professionalism, unity, and vigilance.

Prior to his appointment, Oluyede served as Chief of Army Staff and as the 56th Commander of the Infantry Corps in Jaji, Kaduna. A member of the 39th Regular Course, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1992 (effective 1987) and rose to Major-General in September 2020.

He has held commands including Platoon Commander and adjutant at 65 Battalion, Company Commander at 177 Guards Battalion, Staff Officer at Guards Brigade, and Commandant of the Amphibious Training School.

Oluyede participated in operations such as the ECOMOG Mission in Liberia, Operation HARMONY IV in Bakassi, and Operation HADIN KAI in the North East, where he commanded 27 Task Force Brigade.

His honors include the Corps Medal of Honour, Grand Service Star, Passing the Staff Course, and Membership in the National Institute.
