The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has compensated victims and their families affected by the accidental airstrike that took place on December 25, 2024, in Sokoto State.
Those affected are residents of Gidan Bisa and Rumtuwa villages in Silame Local Government Area, the NAF disclosed in a statement by its Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, on Sunday in Abuja.

Speaking on behalf of the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, the Chief of Civil Military Relations, AVM Edward Gabkwet, thanked the Sokoto State government for promoting strong ties between the NAF and local communities.
The CAS praised Governor Ahmed Aliyu for his inclusive development and security initiatives under the 9-Point Smart Agenda, particularly the creation of the Sokoto State Community Guards Corps. He noted that the governor’s proactive local security measures have strengthened federal efforts against terrorists and bandits, enhancing safety in the state and highlighting the value of civil-military cooperation.

Air Marshal Aneke explained that the airstrike was carried out as part of Operation Fasan Yamma, based on intelligence reports of suspected armed terrorists moving through the affected communities. Despite multiple intelligence confirmations, a petition received in April 2025 reported civilian casualties.
“A detailed investigation revealed that 13 civilians were accidentally killed and eight others injured. This deeply saddened the Service and prompted immediate corrective action,” he said.
The CAS emphasized that civilian harm mitigation has been a key priority since he assumed office on October 24, adding that the NAF exists primarily to protect Nigerian lives and property. He stressed that no professional military force deliberately targets civilians.

He said the compensation effort aims to support affected families, ensure accountability, reduce tensions, and provide closure, while also helping the NAF learn lessons to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Aneke highlighted ongoing initiatives, including the NAF Civilian Harm Mitigation and Response Action Plan, designed to improve operational planning, investigations, and response to civilian harm across all military operations.
The air chief reiterated the NAF’s commitment to precise action against terrorists and criminals, while urging civilians to avoid cohabiting with armed groups, as such proximity increases the risk of collateral damage.

“Public cooperation is crucial for safeguarding lives as security forces intensify operations nationwide. The Nigerian Air Force, alongside other agencies, remains dedicated to ending terrorism, banditry, cattle rustling, and kidnapping across Sokoto, the North-West, and Nigeria as a whole,” he added.
Governor Ahmed Aliyu expressed gratitude to the NAF for its dedication to protecting citizens and preserving national security.
