Renowned Nigerian playwright and Nobel laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, has voiced strong opposition to the recent declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, asserting that such a move undermines the principles of federalism and democratic governance.

The federal government’s decision to suspend Governor Siminalayi Fubara and impose emergency rule came in the wake of two pipeline explosions, incidents reportedly linked to ongoing political tensions between Governor Fubara and factions within the state assembly loyal to former Governor Nyesom Wike.
Soyinka, a longstanding advocate for democratic integrity, argues that the suspension of the state’s elected leadership and the imposition of emergency measures are disproportionate responses that erode the foundational tenets of federalism. He emphasizes that such actions set a troubling precedent for the autonomy of state governments within Nigeria’s federal structure.
Echoing Soyinka’s concerns, prominent legal practitioner Sir Ifeanyi C. Ejiofor has labeled the emergency declaration as a politically motivated assault on constitutional democracy. Ejiofor contends that the federal government’s actions are aimed at appeasing influential political figures rather than addressing genuine security concerns.
Similarly, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has criticized President Bola Tinubu’s decision, describing the state of emergency as a manipulative political maneuver. Atiku asserts that the President’s involvement in Rivers State’s political turmoil reflects a partisan agenda that compromises democratic processes.
The Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) has also condemned the federal intervention, accusing President Tinubu of political bias and warning that such measures could destabilize the region. CISLAC calls upon the National Assembly to reject the state of emergency, highlighting the absence of conditions that would constitutionally justify such an action.
These collective voices underscore a growing apprehension among intellectuals, legal experts, and civil society organizations regarding the federal government’s approach to the crisis in Rivers State. The consensus emphasizes the necessity for solutions that uphold democratic principles, respect the autonomy of state institutions, and adhere strictly to constitutional provisions.
