Former United States Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom, Sam Brownback, has warned that Nigeria risks a violent breakup if the government fails to urgently address the ongoing wave of killings across the country.
Speaking in a video that has since gone viral, Brownback described the situation as reaching a “breaking point,” particularly for Christian communities. He said Nigeria is becoming one of the most dangerous places in the world to practise Christianity, warning that the current trend is unsustainable.

According to him, if the violence continues unchecked, it could trigger widespread instability affecting both Christians and moderate Muslim communities.
Brownback stressed that the Nigerian government must act decisively to protect lives and restore order, or risk plunging the country into deeper conflict with potentially far-reaching consequences.
His comments come amid growing concerns over insecurity in Nigeria, with persistent attacks by armed groups, bandits, and insurgents reported across several regions.
Recent data highlights the severity of the situation. In February 2026 alone, over 600 people were reportedly killed, while more than 400 others were abducted in incidents linked to insecurity nationwide.
The figures also show that the North-West and North-Central regions recorded the highest number of attacks and casualties, reflecting the continued spread of violence in those areas.
Observers say the rising death toll and increasing kidnappings underscore the urgent need for stronger security measures, as fears grow over the long-term stability of the country if the crisis is not addressed.
