At least 24 civilians lost their lives and several others were injured when a suicide bomber attacked a local food joint in Konduga Local Government Area Borno State, late Friday night, June 20, 2025.
According to Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency publication covering the Lake Chad region, the blast occurred around 10:00 p.m. The bomber, identified as a female attacker, had an improvised explosive device (IED) strapped to her body and targeted an area crowded with civilians, including children selling fish in front of a viewing center.
The explosion was devastating, instantly killing many on the scene. Reports say the body of the suicide bomber was mutilated by the blast, with only her head recovered intact. The victims’ bodies have since been moved to a morgue, while those injured were rushed to a nearby hospital for urgent medical attention.
A joint security team, including the military, police, Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), and local hunters, has since visited the blast site. The area has been cordoned off and security operations intensified across Konduga to prevent possible follow-up attacks.
When contacted, ASP Kenneth Daso, the Police Public Relations Officer in Borno State, confirmed the suicide bombing but declined to give specific casualty figures. “Yes, there was a suicide attack in Konduga around 8:00 p.m., and some people lost their lives, while others sustained injuries,” he said during a phone call.
This tragic incident marks the first suicide bombing in Konduga in nearly a year. Located about 36 kilometers from Maiduguri, the state capital, Konduga has previously suffered similar attacks during the ongoing insurgency in the region.
