“AND GOD SAID LET THERE BE LIGHT; AND THERE WAS LIGHT.” – Genesis 1:3.

Verse 1

Thou whose almighty word

Choas and darkness heard,

And took their flight,

Hear us, we humbly pray,

And where the gospel day

Sheds not its glorious ray

Let there be light!

Verse 2

Thou who didst come to bring

On Thy redeeming wing

Healing and sight,

Health to the sick in mind,

Sight to the inly blind,

O now to all mankind

Let there be light!

Verse 3

Spirit of truth and love,

Life-giving, holy Dove,

Speed forth Thy flight:

Move on the water’s face,

Spreading the beams of grace,

And in earth’s darkest place

Let there be light!

Verse 4

Blessed and holy Three,

Glorious Trinity,

Grace, love and might,

Boundless as ocean’s tide

Rolling in fullest pride,

Through the world far and wide

Let there be light.

AMEN.

Genesis, the first Book of the Bible, is sometimes called the Book of Beginnings, as it describes the process of creation by the Almighty God.

The first recorded Word of God at creation is the caption of today’s hymn, taken from Genesis 1:3.

It is a direct and authoritative command, couched in an imperative tone of voice.

As to be expected in relation to anything that emanates from the Throne of God, the immediate response to the command was the creation of light on earth, which was hitherto formless, empty and dark.

The first verse of today’s hymn picturesquely describes what transpired on that eventful day by declaring that chaos and darkness took their flight on hearing the Word of the Almighty God.

The clear and unequivocal message for us is that God’s Will, as expressed in His command, is always final.

It is not subject to any query or resistance from anyone who claims to trust and love Him.

There is no room for prevarification about this.

We either trust and obey our God by submitting to His Will, or elect to do things our own way with the prospects of negative and devastating consequences that will readily expose the foolishness of such actions.

Genesis 1 is an account of the creation of the universe.

It deals with the story of creation, beginning from the creation of light and ending with the creation of man in God’s image.

A careful perusal of Genesis 1 will reveal that the process of creation involved the Trinity, in the persons of God, our Lord Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit.

Genesis 1:2 tells us that the Spirit of God, otherwise known as the Holy Spirit, “was hovering over the waters”.

It is worthy of note that Genesis 1:26 gives a direct indication that man’s creation is the handiwork of more than one person.

The next verse amplifies man to include “male and female”.

All of these go to show that we are creatures of God, consequent upon which we have an obligation to do His Will at all times and in all places.

It is indeed correct to say that practically every sad occurrence among mankind can usually be found to have been a consequence of the failure or refusal of mankind to do God’s Will.

Any type of unrighteousness is certainly antithetical to the Will of God.

God’s Will for us is primarily to love Him and our fellow human beings.

Anyone who does this is extremely unlikely to be involved in dishonourable and reprehensible actions that are clearly unacceptable to God.

However lowly or lofty our status or position in life may be, we should always remain conscious of the fact that we are creatures of God, and that we owe Him the duty to strive for righteousness in our lives.

We thank the Almighty God for being our Creator and Protector. We pray that our trust in Him shall not waver and that obedience to His injunctions will always be our watchword in the mighty name of Jesus AMEN.

May we always make it our way of life to rever the Almighty God who alone can make His light to shine upon us and give us the light of His glory in the peerless name of Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour AMEN.
