The Southwest chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned the recent All Progressives Congress (APC) state caucus meeting held in Iyin Ekiti, where party leaders endorsed Governor Biodun Oyebanji for a second term in office. Describing the event as a “gathering of spent politicians,” the PDP criticized the meeting as a desperate move by a failed administration.
In a strongly worded statement released by the PDP’s Zonal Publicity Secretary, Chief Sanya Atofarati, the party expressed dismay over what it termed a celebration of mediocrity and self-interest, rather than a forum to address the state’s pressing economic and infrastructural challenges.

“It is appalling that the APC would rally around a governor who has clearly failed the people of Ekiti. Governor Oyebanji has little or nothing to show in over two years. No significant project has been commissioned, public schools are in deplorable condition, roads are virtually impassable, and insecurity is worsening,” Atofarati stated.
He accused Governor Oyebanji of plunging the state into unsustainable debt through numerous loans without any visible development to justify them. “Democracy under Oyebanji has been reduced to ‘photo-cracy’—all image, no substance. He thrives on photo-ops while Ekiti crumbles under neglect,” the PDP spokesperson added.
According to Atofarati, if a free and fair election were held today, Oyebanji would not even come close to winning. He also lambasted former Governor Kayode Fayemi, referencing the controversial airport project, which he said remains abandoned despite consuming over N21 billion in public funds.
“In any just society, Fayemi should be answering questions in court, not leading political endorsements,” he said, adding that pushing for Oyebanji’s reelection amounts to a betrayal of Ekiti people.

Governor’s Team Defends Endorsement
In response, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Yinka Oyebode, defended the endorsement, calling it a testament to Oyebanji’s “exemplary leadership and developmental vision.”
According to Oyebode, the governor has made significant strides across all local governments in the state, citing progress in infrastructure, rural electrification, healthcare, agriculture, and youth empowerment.

He emphasized that the overwhelming support from the APC state caucus was “well-earned and fully deserved,” adding that Oyebanji’s administration remains committed to inclusive governance and sustainable development.
While the political battle lines are clearly drawn, the people of Ekiti will ultimately decide which narrative reflects their lived reality.
