In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Moscow accused Washington and Tel Aviv of deliberately escalating tensions in the Middle East at a time when diplomatic talks were reportedly ongoing. The ministry described the strikes as “reprehensible,” suggesting they undermined the negotiation process and violated international law, including principles enshrined in the United Nations Charter.

“A premeditated and unprovoked act of armed aggression, carried out under the cover of resumed negotiations, is deeply reprehensible,” the Russian statement read.

While strongly condemning the strikes, Russia also indicated its willingness to assist in seeking peaceful solutions. The Foreign Ministry said Moscow is ready to step in as a mediator to reduce tensions and support diplomatic engagement.

The statement comes amid heightened international concern. European Union leaders, including President Ursula von der Leyen, described the situation in Iran and the broader Middle East as “greatly concerning,” calling for maximum restraint, protection of civilians, and strict adherence to international law. The EU stressed that diplomatic and negotiated solutions are crucial to prevent a wider regional conflict, particularly given risks to nuclear safety and regional stability.

The airstrikes, conducted on Saturday, February 28, targeted Iranian nuclear and missile infrastructure and marked a dramatic escalation in tensions. Iran responded with missile attacks on U.S. and Israeli positions in the region, resulting in both military and civilian casualties.

Global leaders have reiterated sanctions against Iran, particularly those responsible for repression and destabilisation, while urging that military escalation be avoided and diplomatic avenues prioritized.
