Three people have been confirmed dead after a bus plunged into a river in Oyo State, while five others were rescued alive following the accident.
The incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon when a Suzuki bus with registration number LEW 484 XA, carrying eight passengers, reportedly lost control and crashed into the Ariyo River along Amuloko Road in the Ona Ara Local Government Area.
Emergency responders from the state fire service arrived at the scene and carried out a rescue operation. Five passengers were pulled out alive and taken to a private hospital in the Jegede area of Ona Ara for medical treatment.
The three bodies recovered from the river were later handed over to police officers from the Ogbere Divisional Headquarters for further procedures. Officials said personnel from the road traffic management authority and local government representatives were also present during the rescue operation.
Preliminary findings indicated that reckless driving may have caused the crash. Road accidents remain a growing concern across many parts of Nigeria, with several stakeholders linking the trend to inadequate driver training and weak enforcement of traffic regulations.
