Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has criticized Nigerian politicians for putting their own interests first, particularly their habit of switching parties after losing appointments or elections instead of supporting the winners.
El-Rufai stated this in an old video of him discussing with some unidentified people.
In August 2023, the Senate withheld the confirmation of El-Rufai as a ministerial nominee, citing security reports from the State Security Service for the action.
With the fallout of the ministerial appointment, El-Rufai has in recent times become critical of the Tinubu administration and the All Progressives Congress.
In a recent interview, he claimed that it was not the Senate that rejected him as a Minister but President Tinubu himself.
Speaking to the unidentified people, El-Rufai said; “our politics is driven by private interests, not public interest or the common good. Politicians often claim that politics is about serving the public, but their actions tell a different story.
“If they don’t get their way, they are willing to bring down the entire system. Every military coup in Nigeria’s history was orchestrated by civilians who lost elections—whether fairly or unfairly.
“When a politician contests for a position and loses, they rarely support the party member who wins the nomination. Instead, they often defect to the opposition, working to ensure that the person who defeated them loses the election. This reveals a political culture where personal interests come before everything else.
“The difference between humans and animals lies in our ability to prioritize collective good over individual gain. Sadly, most Nigerian politicians operate on the principle of ‘every man for himself,’ with little regard for the country or even their own political parties.
“This self-serving mindset is deeply ingrained in our political culture. Politicians see this as the norm, and changing it will require significant effort and determination.”
