Some armed political thugs have vandalised the venue of the congress organised by the Peoples Democratic Party, Zamfara State chapter.
The PUNCH gathered that immediately the thugs arrived at the venue, they started beating and stoning the PDP members, injuring many.
It was also gathered that the thugs damaged several cars, chairs, canopies, election materials and set other properties on fire in order to scare away the PDP delegates who converged on the venue for the congress.
A member of the PDP, Musa Garba said, “We scheduled our state congress to hold today (Monday) to enable us elect the news state executive officers to run the affairs of the party in Zamfara State
“We had notified all the relevant security agencies in the state for smooth conduct of the exercise but to our dismay, these thugs came and started throwing stones on our members.
“They have also succeeded in destroying many of our vehicles, chairs and the election materials”. They also attempted to burn down our party secretariat opposite Zamfara State Ministry of Finance if not for the quick response of the security agents”.
Garba wondered why anybody should send political thugs to disrupt the PDP congress in the state, calling on the security agents to investigate the issue with a view to punishing those involved in the act.
The congress was, however, shifted to the Nigerian Army Facility (Command Guest House) in Gusau for security reasons.
But the state APC members loyal to former Governor Abdul’Aziz Yari have distanced themselves from the recent attack of the PDP members.
In a statement, the Chairman, Publicity Committee of the APC, Yari faction, Alhaji Ibrahim Magaji said, it was not in the character of former Governor Yari to attack the opposition, no matter what.
Birnin Magaji said the former governor had no such record of attacking his opposition throughout his eight-year tenure as governor.
He said, “Our attention was drawn to a recent Statement credited to the PDP Zamfara State after some skirmishes it had with what it allegedly described as APC thugs while conducting its state congress on Monday in Gusau, the Zamfara State capital.
“We want to state categorically that Zamfara State APC loyal to former Governor Yari was not part of this dastardly, undemocratic and uncivilised act of barbarism.”
