President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the establishment of the Federal University of Science and Technology, Epe, Lagos State, ending the seven-year ban on creating new tertiary institutions.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced the approval during Thursday’s plenary, confirming that Tinubu had signed the Federal University of Science and Technology, Epe (Establishment) Bill, 2025 into law.
Akpabio congratulated the people of Epe and Lagos State, describing the move as a reflection of Tinubu’s commitment to expanding access to quality, specialized higher education.
The bill’s sponsor, Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, said the new university would focus on disciplines essential to national development, including engineering, computer science, software engineering, artificial intelligence, and data science—key areas for advancing Nigeria’s digital economy.

The approval follows the Federal Executive Council’s earlier decision in August to impose a seven-year moratorium on establishing new federal universities and colleges.
