President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to head Nigeria’s delegation to the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), set to commence on September 23, 2025, in New York, USA.
According to Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications (Office of the Vice President), Shettima will deliver Nigeria’s national statement on September 24, between 3:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. (New York time). His address will focus on Nigeria’s contributions to global peace, regional security, and climate change initiatives.
Shettima will also attend a UN Secretary-General’s Climate Summit to present Nigeria’s updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement. Additionally, he will participate in key side events, including the International Conference for the Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine, a roundtable on energy and security in the Gulf of Guinea, and the Forward Africa Leaders Symposium, which will address digital transformation and the AfCFTA’s digital trade framework. He will also join a High-Level Roundtable on Adequate and Affordable Housing hosted by Kenya’s President, alongside other bilateral engagements.
The 80th UNGA, themed “Better Together: 80 Years and More for Peace, Development and Human Rights,” emphasizes global cooperation and the UN’s role in advancing peace, development, and human rights.
This marks Shettima’s second time leading Nigeria’s UNGA delegation, having represented President Tinubu in 2024, where he delivered the national statement and engaged in significant sideline events and bilateral meetings.
Following the UNGA, Shettima will travel to Frankfurt, Germany, for discussions with Deutsche Bank officials before returning to Nigeria.
