Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has announced that the Federal Government under President Bola Tinubu has approved a ₦1 trillion Metropolitan Rail Service for the state to improve urban transportation.
The large-scale rail project is designed to modernize movement within Kano metropolis and boost economic activities. The development comes just days after the governor revealed his political alignment with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Governor Yusuf made the disclosure while speaking to members of the Kano delegation that took part in the 2025 National Qur’anic Recitation Competition held in Borno State.
He explained that the state’s renewed alignment with the Federal Government was a calculated move intended to attract major development projects and benefits for Kano residents.
According to him, the rail initiative represents a transformative investment that will position Kano as a key transport center in Northern Nigeria. He noted that the system will help decongest roads, support commerce, and encourage wider economic growth across the metropolitan area.
The governor said the proposed rail network will connect major parts of the city and provide residents with a modern, reliable, and affordable mass transit option. He added that the project is expected to improve daily commuting, enhance trade, and draw investor interest into the state.

Yusuf assured that the Kano State Government will partner with relevant federal bodies to ensure the project is executed with transparency and in line with required standards so that citizens receive full value from it.
He also expressed appreciation to the Federal Government for approving the project and reaffirmed his administration’s readiness to support federal development efforts through complementary state policies and infrastructure.
Details of the approval were contained in a statement issued by the Director General of Media and Publicity at the Kano Government House, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.

The ₦1 trillion rail scheme is projected to rank among the biggest infrastructure investments ever undertaken in Kano State and is expected to significantly reshape the city’s transport system when completed.
