President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to democracy and religious freedom amid U.S. President Donald Trump’s threat of military action over alleged persecution of Christians.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has summoned all foreign diplomats following Trump’s remarks, in which he redesignated Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” and accused the government of ignoring “genocide against Christians.”
Tinubu dismissed the allegations as a misrepresentation of Nigeria’s reality, emphasizing that his administration has worked with both Christian and Muslim leaders to address nationwide security challenges. “Nigeria stands firmly as a democracy governed by constitutional guarantees of religious liberty,” he said.

China and the European Union have voiced support for Nigeria. Beijing condemned any attempt to use religion or human rights as grounds for interference, while the EU reaffirmed respect for Nigeria’s sovereignty and commitment to promoting peace, interfaith dialogue, and human rights.
