“Tinubu Made the Right Move”: Agbakoba Backs Security Shake-Up After Alleged Coup Plot

Senior lawyer and former NBA president, Olisa Agbakoba (SAN), has praised President Bola Tinubu’s decision to reshuffle Nigeria’s security leadership following reports of an attempted coup.

President Tinubu announced changes to the nation’s service chiefs last week, including the appointment of a new Chief of Defence Staff, in what the presidency described as efforts to strengthen national security.

Speaking on Channels Television, Agbakoba said the move was timely and necessary, especially if the alleged coup reports were true. He noted that Tinubu’s decisiveness contrasts sharply with the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, who, according to him, kept his military chiefs in office for too long.

“You have a president who is ready to take tough decisions,” Agbakoba said. “If there was indeed a rumoured coup, he acted sensibly by responding swiftly.”

Rumours of a coup surfaced after the government cancelled Nigeria’s 65th Independence Day celebrations on October 1. Both the military and the presidency denied the reports.

Agbakoba added that the next step is to see tangible results from the newly appointed security chiefs, stressing that the reshuffle must translate into improved national security.
