TINUBU SET TO EMBARK ON TWO-DAY STATE VISIT TO UK WEEKS AFTER FALLING IN TURKEY

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will undertake a two-day state visit to the United Kingdom on March 18, 2026, at the invitation of King Charles III, Buckingham Palace announced on Saturday.

The President will be accompanied by his wife, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, for the historic trip—the first state visit to the UK by a Nigerian leader in 37 years.

The last three Nigerian state visits to the UK were by:

– General Yakubu Gowon in 1973

– President Shehu Shagari in 1981

– General Ibrahim Babangida in 1989

King Charles III (then Prince of Wales) previously visited Nigeria in 1990, 1999, 2006, and 2018.

This will be President Tinubu’s first official state visit to the UK since assuming office in May 2023, though he has met King Charles on two prior occasions:

– November 2023 (ahead of COP28 in Dubai)

– September 2024 (private meeting at Buckingham Palace)

During the September 2024 meeting, the leaders discussed global and regional priorities, with a particular focus on climate change, according to presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga.

Buckingham Palace stated that further details of the programme—including engagements, ceremonies, and bilateral discussions—will be released in due course.

The visit comes weeks after President Tinubu’s brief health episode during an official visit to Türkiye in late January 2026, from which he has since fully recovered and resumed duties.
