Tinubu Urges Nigerian Youths to Use New Media for Unity, Innovation, and Nation-Building

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on young Nigerians to use their digital influence responsibly and harness the power of new media to drive national unity, innovation, and sustainable development.

Speaking on Friday at the opening session of the Progressive Digital Media Summit held at the State House Banquet Hall, Abuja, the President warned against the dangers of misinformation and emphasized the growing importance of digital platforms in shaping the nation’s future.

The summit, themed “Unveiling the Critical Role of New Media in National Development”, drew participation from hundreds of youth leaders, tech entrepreneurs, content creators, and senior government officials including Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia and Sokoto State Governor Ahmad Aliyu.

“You Are Building the Future” — Tinubu

In his keynote address, President Tinubu said that Nigerian youths have moved beyond being passive observers in national conversations to becoming active builders of the future.

“From creating digital platforms to forming vibrant online communities, young Nigerians are showing extraordinary creativity and a deep commitment to progress. You are not waiting for the future—you are building it,” he said.

He emphasized that new media has transformed from a support tool into a powerful engine for economic growth, social transformation, civic engagement, and democratic accountability.

Responsibility in the Digital Age

Acknowledging the vast influence of young Nigerians in the digital space, Tinubu urged them to wield their power wisely:

“As your influence grows, so must our shared sense of purpose and responsibility. Create businesses that employ others, content that uplifts, and platforms that unite. Let Nigeria’s digital space reflect the values that bind us—discipline, compassion, patriotism.”

He warned against the rise of disinformation and digital toxicity:

“We live in an age where falsehood spreads faster than truth. Pause before you post. Let your digital footprint reflect truth, integrity, and national pride.”

Government Support and Infrastructure

The President reassured the digital community that his administration is committed to enabling the sector with improved infrastructure and policy support.

“We’re investing in digital infrastructure and broadband expansion. Internet access must no longer be a privilege, but a right for all. Through policies like the National Digital Innovation Forum, we’re nurturing startups and protecting online safety.”

Youths as Nigeria’s Greatest Asset

Describing the youth population as the country’s greatest strength, Tinubu said their passion, creativity, and determination must be matched with purpose:

“Use your platforms not just for personal branding or retaliation but to solve problems. Champion digital literacy. Mentor others. Let your work uplift society.”

He drew inspiration from the recent victory of Nigeria’s Super Falcons in the 2024 WAFCON Final, highlighting their resilience and unity:

“They came back from two goals down to make history. That spirit of determination and teamwork is what we must emulate.”

A Message of Hope

Concluding his remarks, the President offered a message of optimism:

“May your voices lift others. May your leadership be grounded in integrity. Let your generation be remembered not just for its potential, but for turning promise into achievement.”
