The Federal Government has approved a ₦1.5 trillion (approximately $1 billion) light rail project for Kano metropolis, a move expected to create thousands of jobs, ease transportation, and stimulate economic growth in northern Nigeria.
Rep. Abubakar Kabir Bichi, Chairman of the House Committee on Appropriation, announced the project, describing it as a major step in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s infrastructure agenda. Currently in the procurement phase, the initiative aims to tackle severe traffic congestion, improve urban mobility, and strengthen Kano’s role as a leading commercial hub.
Modelled after successful light rail systems in Europe and Asia, the Kano project will connect key parts of the city to Nigeria’s broader economic network. Supporters believe it will not only enhance daily commuting but also spur trade and investment across the region.
The light rail forms part of a broader infrastructure push across the north. Other notable projects include the nearly completed Kaduna–Zaria–Kano road, the re-awarded Kaduna–Abuja highway, the recently completed 200km Kano–Hadejia road, and the ₦250 billion Kano Northern Bypass. Together, they underscore the Tinubu administration’s focus on bridging infrastructure gaps and driving balanced regional development.
News of the light rail approval gained traction after Nigerian professional Nurudeen Adeyemi shared details on LinkedIn, describing the project as a potential game-changer for Kano. Using hashtags such as #GodBlessNigeria and #MayTinubuSucceed, Adeyemi said the plan could replicate global transport successes while being tailored to Nigeria’s needs.
Public response has been largely positive, though some have called for transparency in implementation and urged the government to complete ongoing projects before starting new ones.
If delivered on schedule, the Kano light rail could set a precedent for modern urban transit in Nigeria, paving the way for similar systems in other states. With procurement underway, attention now turns to the groundbreaking — and the day Kano residents will take their first ride on the new network.
