Tinubu’s minister Wale Edun emerges president of Nigerian Boxing Federation

Nigeria’s Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, has been elected unopposed as the new President of the Nigerian Boxing Federation (NBF).

Edun, a long-time boxing enthusiast, secured all 12 votes at the election held on Saturday at the MKO Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.

In his acceptance speech, Edun promised to reform and revitalize Nigerian boxing through transparency, inclusion, and grassroots development. “Our goal is to restore Nigerian boxing to its rightful place on the global stage,” he said.

Hon. Omonlei Imadu of the South-West zone emerged as Vice President after defeating his North-Central opponent, Mighty Mike, by eight votes to four. Imadu hailed Edun’s leadership as a “new dawn” for the sport, citing his passion and track record in youth boxing development.

The election, supervised by the National Sports Commission (NSC) led by Mallam Shehu Dikko and Hon. Bukola Olopade, was praised for its fairness and transparency.

Beyond his ministerial duties, Edun chairs the Lagos Boxing Hall of Fame (LBHF), a non-profit he founded in 2010 to promote amateur boxing. The organization runs monthly tournaments such as the Governor’s Belt Championship and has produced several top Nigerian boxing talents.

Edun also serves on the board of the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award Foundation and chairs the Livewell Initiative, a health-focused NGO.
